Within the philosophy, I love the idea of "offering experiences." Our education guru, Beau Kenyon, does a lovely job illuminating the core principles in his latest piece, "A Montessori-inspired Place". Let's encourage our friends to look at the world through the lens of a scientist. Today, we will establish boundaries for our kiddos, whilst enjoying and exploring the always exciting "Magic Milk Experiment". Bonus: this only takes a mere moment to set up! See video at the bottom for a magical experience.
Project of the Day: Montessori Magic Milk ExperimentMaterials:- Milk- Dish Soap- Food coloring- Plate or bowlStep One: Lay all of the materials out for your child. The more organized, the more possibilities!Step Two: Add the milk to your bowl, plate, or tray. Take a moment to observe the raw materials.Step Three: Add small dots of food coloring to the milk. If you are using a bowl, place the droplets towards the center. Encourage your kids to leave a bit of space between each color. The more colors the better. Unfortunately, I only had red...so mine looked a bit creepy at the halfway mark.Step Four: Now...for the MAGIC! Add a drop of dish soap and observe the results! If you are using a larger tray or plate you can add a drop of soap on one side. Observe the effect and then add another droplet on the other side in the milk and see if there is a difference.Step Five: Encourage observations here. What do we see? Let them dip a finger in the mixture. Does it feel any different once the soap was added?Step Six: Amazing! However, this experiment begs the question: why? Why does adding the soap have a magical effect?Explanation:What makes up milk? A fun time to chat about tiny molecules moving all about! There are proteins and fat molecules in milk (this is why its important to use a more fatty 2% or whole milk for the experiment).Add the Soap:When you add the dish soap into the mix, it breaks up the fat molecules. They are dispersed all about and quickly move to try to get back together. The food color in the mixture allows us to see this magical process!
