Find a space where your little can get a bit messy while learning the basics of a chemical reaction. Project of the Day: Glitter Explosion in a Cup!!! Materials Clear Container, Bottle, or Vase 3-4 tablespoons Baking Soda Food Coloring Glitter- optional depending on desired mess level! The Experiment Watch this video for step-by-step project directions and ways to communicate the science behind this experiment to your kiddos. If you try this at home, share your pictures and videos with us on Instagram @solbe.learning so we can see how your experiment turned out! Step One Lay out all of your materials! Step Two Add 5-6 tablespoons of baking soda into a clear container. Step Three Drop in food coloring of your choice and glitter…you don’t need much! Step Four Encourage your child to brainstorm a hypothesis! Ask questions to inspire…What color do you think the solution will be after we combine the liquid with the baking soda? Can you make an educated guess as to what will happen to the baking soda when you add the vinegar? Will it overflow the top of the cup? Step Five Reaction time! Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the mixture and enjoy the reaction! What can we do here to inspire inquiry in our friends? If we add in different materials does the reaction change? You could try asking, “what do you think is happening here?” or “what were you thinking about when we were watching the reaction?” or “what did you see?” Can you have the kiddos incorporate all of their senses? What does it smell like? How did the color change? What did it feel like when you touched it? Most important direction, as always: HAVE FUN! More resources to follow in the coming days. Feedback and more ideas welcome! Above all, be well and stay healthy! The SolBe Team
